Ed Stanley

Ed Stanley is a partner specialising in insurance and reinsurance matters.

After studying modern history at Oxford, Ed joined Elborne Mitchell as a trainee and qualified as a solicitor in 1984, becoming a partner in 1989. He left in 1998 to become a partner in the Reinsurance department of another leading City practice before returning to Elborne Mitchell in late 2006.

Ed's expertise covers all aspects of insurance, reinsurance and associated professional indemnity work, especially the handling and management of complex disputes. In recent times, he has managed a number of major market arbitrations, notably involving PA reinsurance written through a Bermuda agency, reinsurance of Scandinavian workers' compensation business and reinsurance of UK mesothelioma exposure.

Ed has a particular interest in issues which affect the run-off market, from commutations through to more complex alternative solutions.

He has been involved in a number of important Court cases which affect the insurance and reinsurance market, including Lincoln v Sun Life, Deutsche Ruck v Zion, Unum v Israel Phoenix and Allianz v Marchant as well as having acting in the defence of members' agents in the Gooda Walker litigation.

Ed is a regular speaker at market conferences and events and contributor to market publications. As Court judgements become more complex and convoluted, he has a reputation for cutting through the legal niceties in explaining what market people need to know.

In his spare time, Ed enjoys cycling (he has cycled from London to Monte Carlo and from Land's End to John O'Groats) and plays keyboards in a soul band. He has recently become a father for the first time.
